Strip cut construction differs from the more traditional method of assembling a design from pieces of flat glass that are cut to a specific size and shape, then fused together. In strip cut construction, the project is composed of precisely cut strips of glass, cut as wide as the thickness of the body of the piece (generally 3/8 to 1/2 inch). When these strips are set on edge, dammed (held in place by pieces of kiln dams or with strips of fiber paper), and fired, they create a solid piece of glass which is generally bubble-free. It is possible to achieve very precise graphic designs in strip-cut work by varying the colors and the arrangement of the strips.  Intricate designs can be inserted in the strip construction, creating a piece with delightful ‘windows’. This method is time-consuming and exact, but the results are well worth it.
You’ll learn cutting methods and tricks, and make pattern bars and test panels on the first day as you learn these techniques, and will complete a strip-cut bowl on the second day.
In the course of this workshop you will also learn to use the tile saw, flat lap grinder, wet belt sander and sandblaster.
